At 21, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life.
So I went to London.
I had no relevant experience in PR and zero contacts.
I got hold of a book of agencies from The Guardian and called over 100 of them to get an interview.
There were A LOT of rejections.
Out of 124 calls, I got two interviews.
The first one I totally failed at.
But I learnt fast.
The second interview, I ended up presenting an idea about the Virgin brand.
They called me back.
Three interviews later, I got my first job as a PR account exec.
I had no experience and NO idea what I was doing.
I learnt everything I could from everyone I worked with.
Things started going well and people started noticing.
I learnt to do my own PR too.
I worked my way up through the industry.
Then I got headhunted by Red Bull.
I worked on new products, ad campaigns and massive events like Red Bull Air Race.
A move back to Yorkshire felt like a move away from my marketing dream.
But I worked my way up again in PR for a multinational real estate firm and became a Director.
Then my dad died.
I knew I wanted to go freelance.
I wanted to help small businesses and agency owners to grow.
Fast forward to today, I’m helping clients to build their profile with PR, influencers and social media advertising.
A few years ago I thought…
– That getting promoted was the key to my happiness.
– That the best people work in the biggest companies.
– That a big salary and a company car were the only things to aspire to.
But all of that turned out to be wrong.
I just had to fail and learn. Over and over again!
That’s where the growth is. Both as a human and as a marketer.
So to all the freelancers and business owners out there, remember:
It’s not about what society says you should do, a great career is about what YOUR idea of success is.
